Braces in Ooty

Braces are fixed appliances — brackets bonded to each tooth and connected by an archwire — that move teeth gradually into a planned position. At RC's Dentcare in Upper Bazar, Ooty, we fit both metal and tooth-coloured brackets and see you at regular intervals to change wires as the teeth respond.

The two worries we hear most

Almost every adult who sits down to discuss braces asks the same two things: how visible will they be, and how long will I have them on. Teenagers ask a third — will it hurt.

Honest answers: metal brackets are visible, ceramic ones much less so; duration depends on how far the teeth have to travel; and there is soreness for a few days after fitting and after each wire change, manageable with ordinary painkillers.

Where braces go wrong

Braces fail for two reasons, and neither is the bracket. The first is hygiene — plaque left around brackets demineralises enamel and leaves permanent white marks after the braces come off. The second is missed appointments; a wire left unchanged for months simply stops working.

We would rather set this expectation clearly at the start than have a conversation about white spots at the end.

How the treatment runs here

Brackets are bonded and the first light archwire placed. From there you come in at set intervals for wire changes, each one a little firmer as the teeth align, then a detailing phase where individual tooth positions and the bite are refined.

When the braces come off, retainers go on the same day. We show you how to clean them, how long to wear them, and what to do if one cracks.

Tell us your age, what you would like corrected and whether appearance during treatment matters to you, and we will suggest the sensible bracket option.

Braces in Ooty — common questions

Are tooth-coloured braces as effective as metal ones?
For most cases yes. Ceramic brackets are more discreet but slightly bulkier and more brittle, so we discuss the trade-off case by case.
How often will I need to come in?
Typically every four to eight weeks, depending on the stage of treatment.
What foods should I avoid with braces?
Very hard and sticky foods — ice, hard nuts, chikki, sticky sweets — because they debond brackets. Cutting harder fruit and vegetables into pieces is usually enough.
What do I do if a bracket comes loose?
Message the clinic. A single loose bracket is not an emergency, but it should be re-bonded reasonably soon so treatment does not stall.
