Root Canals in Ooty
Root canal treatment removes infected or damaged pulp from inside a tooth, cleans and shapes the canal system, then seals it so the tooth can be kept rather than extracted. At RC's Dentcare in Ooty the treatment is carried out under local anaesthesia and is usually completed over one or two visits, followed by a crown or filling.

The pain that wakes you at 2 AM
Pulp infection has a particular signature: throbbing that builds when you lie down, sensitivity to hot that lingers long after the drink is finished, and pain that painkillers dull without removing.
Sometimes there is no pain at all — the nerve has already died and the first sign is a small swelling on the gum or a dark shadow on a radiograph.
Why the tooth will not settle on its own
Once bacteria reach the pulp, the tissue inside the tooth cannot recover — it is sealed in hard tissue with no room to swell and no way to clear the infection. Antibiotics may quieten the symptoms for a week or two, but they do not sterilise the canal.
Left alone, the infection tracks out of the root tip into bone, forming an abscess. At that stage the choice narrows to root canal treatment or extraction.
What the treatment involves here
Radiographs and symptoms confirm the diagnosis. The tooth is anaesthetised, the canal system cleaned and shaped, then filled and sealed. Radiographs are taken during and after treatment to confirm the canals are properly obturated.
Because a root-treated tooth is more brittle, we plan the restoration as part of the treatment rather than leaving it as a separate decision. Back teeth usually need a crown to survive chewing forces long term.
If a tooth is keeping you awake, do not wait for it to settle — describe the symptoms and we will get you seen.

Root Canals in Ooty — common questions
- Is a root canal painful?
- The treatment itself is done under local anaesthesia and is generally comparable to having a filling. Most of the pain people associate with root canals is the infection beforehand.
- How many visits does it take?
- One or two visits for most teeth, depending on the number of canals and whether there is active infection to settle first.
- Do I definitely need a crown afterwards?
- Back teeth almost always do, because they take heavy chewing loads and are prone to fracture after treatment. Some front teeth can be restored with a filling.
- Is extraction not simpler than a root canal?
- It is quicker, but you then have a gap to manage. Keeping your own tooth is usually the better long-term outcome when the tooth is restorable.
