Extractions in Ooty
An extraction is the removal of a tooth that cannot be restored, is causing infection, or must be removed to allow other treatment. At RC's Dentcare in Ooty, extraction is only recommended after a radiograph confirms the tooth cannot reasonably be saved, and we discuss how the space will be managed before anything is removed.

Nobody wants to lose a tooth
The word extraction produces more anxiety than almost any other in dentistry, and the anxiety is usually about two things: the procedure itself, and the gap afterwards.
Both are more manageable than people expect, but only if the decision is made deliberately rather than in the middle of a painful night.
The cost of postponing
A tooth that has been written off but left in place keeps causing problems. Infection can spread into the surrounding bone and soft tissue, and an emergency extraction during an acute infection is more uncomfortable and harder to anaesthetise than a planned one.
Delay also removes options. Bone around a long-infected socket heals less predictably, which matters if you later want an implant there.
How the appointment runs
We confirm from the examination and radiograph that removal is genuinely the right option, anaesthetise the area fully, and remove the tooth with controlled technique — pressure is normal, sharp pain is not, and you tell us if you feel any.
You leave with written aftercare covering bleeding, rinsing, eating and pain relief, plus a plan for reviewing the site and, when relevant, replacing the tooth.
If you have been told a tooth needs removing and want it handled calmly and properly, get in touch.

Extractions in Ooty — common questions
- Will the extraction hurt?
- The area is fully numbed, so you should feel pressure rather than pain. Afterwards there is usually soreness for a few days.
- How long does healing take?
- The gum surface typically closes over within one to two weeks; the underlying bone remodels over several months.
- What should I avoid after an extraction?
- Do not rinse vigorously, spit, smoke or use a straw for the first day, as these can dislodge the clot. Stick to soft food and follow the written instructions we give you.
- Do I have to replace the tooth?
- Not always — back wisdom teeth usually need no replacement. For most other teeth, replacement prevents drifting and preserves your bite, and we will explain the options.
