Fillings & Sealants in Ooty
A filling restores a tooth damaged by decay or fracture using tooth-coloured composite; a sealant is a thin protective coating placed into the deep grooves of a back tooth before decay can start. RC's Dentcare in Ooty uses fillings restoratively and sealants preventively, most often for children and teenagers.

Decay does not start where you can see it
The two places cavities most often begin are between the teeth, where the brush never reaches, and in the deep pits and fissures on the biting surface of molars, which are narrower than a single bristle.
Both are invisible in a mirror. Both are routinely picked up at an examination while they are still small.
Small cavities do not stay small
Decay accelerates once it passes through enamel into the softer dentine underneath. A cavity that needed a modest filling in the spring can reach the nerve by the following year, at which point the treatment is a root canal and a crown rather than twenty minutes and a composite.
For children with deep grooves, the same logic applies in reverse: sealing the groove before decay starts avoids the whole sequence.
How we restore and protect teeth
Decay is identified clinically and radiographically, then removed conservatively — we take out what is affected and leave what is sound. Tooth-coloured composite is placed in layers, shaped and cured, then the bite is checked and adjusted so the new surface meets the opposing tooth correctly.
For sealants, the grooves are cleaned and a flowable resin is bonded into them. It is quick, painless and needs no anaesthetic.
If you have a tooth catching food or a child with newly erupted molars, this is the appointment to book.

Fillings & Sealants in Ooty — common questions
- Are tooth-coloured fillings as strong as amalgam?
- Modern composites perform well in most situations and bond to the tooth, which supports the remaining structure. Very large restorations in back teeth may be better served by an inlay or crown.
- Will I need an injection for a filling?
- Often, but not always — very shallow cavities and sealants usually need no anaesthetic. We discuss it before starting.
- Why is my tooth sensitive after a filling?
- Mild sensitivity to cold or biting for a short period is common and normally settles. If it persists or worsens, tell us so the bite and restoration can be checked.
- At what age should children have sealants?
- Usually soon after the permanent molars erupt, around six and again around twelve, when the grooves are most vulnerable.
