Veneers & Crowns in Ooty

A crown covers and protects a weakened or heavily restored tooth; a veneer is a thin ceramic facing bonded to the front of a tooth to change its shape or colour. At RC's Dentcare in Ooty both are planned around the health of the underlying tooth and your bite, with a provisional restoration worn while the final one is made.

Two treatments that solve different problems

Crowns are structural. A tooth that has been root treated, cracked, or filled so many times that little natural tooth remains needs something that wraps around it and holds it together.

Veneers are cosmetic. They change how the front of a tooth looks without rebuilding it. Confusing the two — using a veneer where the tooth needs structural support — is how restorations fail.

What is at stake in the preparation

Both treatments involve removing tooth structure, and that decision is permanent. Prepare too little and the ceramic is too thin to survive; prepare too aggressively and you compromise the tooth or irritate the pulp.

The other frequent failure is the margin. A crown edge that sits badly against the gum traps plaque, and the tooth decays underneath a restoration that still looks perfect from outside.

How we do it

We agree suitability, shade and design first, prepare the tooth conservatively and record it, and fit a provisional restoration while the laboratory fabricates the final one. At the fit appointment the restoration is bonded and the bite carefully checked and adjusted.

Shade matching is done in good light and, where the case demands it, against your own photographs — a crown that matches under clinic lighting but not in daylight has not been matched.

If you have a tooth that keeps breaking or a restoration that no longer matches, let us look at what it actually needs.

Veneers & Crowns in Ooty — common questions

What is the difference between a veneer and a crown?
A veneer covers only the front surface and is mainly cosmetic. A crown covers the whole tooth and provides structural protection.
How long do crowns and veneers last?
Many years when the underlying tooth stays healthy and the bite is well managed. Grinding, decay at the margin and gum disease are the usual reasons they fail early.
Will I be without a tooth while it is being made?
No. A provisional restoration is fitted so you can eat and smile normally while the final one is fabricated.
Can a crown be placed over a root canal treated tooth?
Yes, and for back teeth it is usually recommended, because root-treated teeth are more prone to fracture.
